A father is fighting for his life in hospital after a horrific stabbing incident left his wife dead and his teenage daughter critically injured.
The tragic event unfolded on Sunday evening, August 18, outside the family’s home on Barnard Road, Gorton.
Alberta Obinim, 43, was killed at the scene. She reportedly died while attempting to protect her family during the attack. Her husband, Joshua Obinim, 64, and their 17-year-old daughter were both severely injured and taken to the hospital.
The family is known for their involvement with the Blessed Baptist Temple in Levenshulme, where Mr. Obinim serves as a pastor. Church administrator Anthony Clement said, “We are still waiting to hear from the police and hospital. As of last night, he was still in a critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers go to him.”
According to eyewitnesses, Alberta Obinim tried to shield a young child from the assailant but was stabbed multiple times in the process. Neighbours reported a chaotic scene, with some fleeing the home through windows as the attacker launched his assault. One resident described how they found a child hiding in bushes and quickly brought the youngster to safety.
Another witness recounted seeing the attacker chase and stab a girl down the street. Reece, who was in his car nearby, said he saw the assailant attacking the girl and tried to intervene but was unable to prevent the assault.
Emergency services arrived at the scene around 11:20 p.m. and found all three victims with serious injuries. A 22-year-old man, known to the victims, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The suspect also sustained superficial injuries and is currently in hospital under police guard. Authorities have described the incident as a “domestic matter.”
The brutal attack has sent shockwaves through the local community. A police cordon remains in place on Barnard Road, with crime scene tape and a forensic tent visible outside the Obinim family’s home. Tributes have been paid to Alberta Obinim, a home carer and respected member of Manchester’s Ghanaian community.
Colleagues and friends remembered her for her kindness, warmth, and sense of humour. “She was amazing, lovely,” said a colleague, describing the shock and grief those who knew her felt.
Family friend Ibrahim Abu, known as Obudo, praised Alberta as a “very nice lady” who was like a mother to everyone and always had a smile. Derrick Wiafe described her as “powerful and inspirational.”
Detective Superintendent Toby Facey expressed condolences to the community, acknowledging the impact of the tragedy. “Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We are doing all we can to support them.”
Neighbourhood Sergeant Adrian Girtchen added, “We can feel this incident’s shock waves through the local community. Our thoughts and wishes remain with them and everyone affected.”
Detectives are urging anyone with information, particularly those with dashcam, doorbell, or mobile phone footage from around 11 p.m. on Sunday, to come forward.
