A factory worker has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the attempted murder of a colleague, whom he stabbed in a “horrifying and determined” attack after she rejected his advances.

Witold Kaleta, 61, admitted to the charge following the incident on April 27, which left the victim, a 53-year-old woman, with life-threatening injuries.

The court heard that Kaleta, who lived in the same shared house as the woman, had long harboured feelings for her. However, she viewed his attempts at romance as a “joke” and had no intention of pursuing a relationship. On the day of the attack, Kaleta, under the influence of alcohol, suddenly lost his temper and picked up a kitchen knife, stabbing her four times.

Prosecutor Michele Stuart-Lofthouse described the chaotic scene that unfolded when a neighbour called emergency services after seeing the “extremely distressed and injured” woman outside their home. Upon arrival, police found the woman bleeding heavily from stab wounds to her back and arm.

Stuart-Lofthouse reported that police later discovered Kaleta in another room, with pornography playing on the television. A bloodied knife was found in the kitchen, alongside various blood stains. The woman had previously dismissed Kaleta’s romantic overtures and was shocked by the sudden violence, as he had never displayed any signs of aggression before.

After the stabbing, the victim was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, where doctors drained blood from her chest. Although her injuries were potentially life-threatening, she did not require surgery and has since made a full physical recovery.

However, she continues to suffer from psychological trauma, including flashbacks and an inability to return to work, prompting her to relocate for her safety.

Kaleta expressed remorse for his actions, stating, “I just waited for the police to arrive. I did not plan on it. I hope she is okay. I regret what I have done.” His defence lawyer, David Godfrey, noted that Kaleta had no previous convictions and that he struggled to comprehend his sudden violent behaviour.

Judge John Thackray KC addressed Kaleta during sentencing, emphasising the severity of the attack and its profound impact on the victim. He highlighted that the assault could have easily resulted in a fatal outcome and acknowledged the ongoing psychological harm inflicted upon the woman.

Kaleta communicated through a Polish interpreter during the proceedings and was already in custody on remand before sentencing.
