Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Marcus Rashford is on the path to rediscovering his form but emphasizes the need for the forward to “set his life right” off the pitch.

The 26-year-old had a challenging season last year, managing just eight goals across all competitions and missing out on England’s Euro 2024 squad under Gareth Southgate.

Rashford’s troubles were compounded by a fine of £650,000—equivalent to two weeks’ wages—after missing a training session following a night out.

Despite being named Player of the Match in United’s 7-0 victory against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, Rashford has faced criticism for underwhelming performances in recent Premier League matches against Fulham, Brighton, and Liverpool.

Ten Hag believes Rashford is showing signs of improvement but insists the forward must maintain his discipline to sustain his progress. “Every player, especially in this club, needs resilience,” Ten Hag said. “A football career is never just upwards—you face setbacks, and you have to manage them. Marcus has experienced that and knows how to fight back.”

When asked about Rashford’s support system, including influence from former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag acknowledged the role of guidance but stressed personal accountability. “At the end of the day, he has to do it himself. He has to set his life, training, and match attitude right. When he commits to his professionalism, he’ll perform because he’s a class player.”

Ten Hag concluded by highlighting the importance of a disciplined lifestyle for any player aiming to succeed at the highest level: “If your lifestyle isn’t right, you can’t perform in this league. You don’t reach the top levels without discipline on and off the field.”
