Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party in the United States, declaring his intent to break what he described as the country’s entrenched “one-party system” and offer voters “freedom” from political stagnation.
Musk, who was once a close political ally of US President Donald Trump and served as the head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, launched the “America Party” in a series of posts on his social media platform, X.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who was also Trump’s largest individual donor in the 2024 presidential election, fell out with the President earlier this year over. disagreements regarding federal spending and governance.

The announcement follows an Independence Day poll Musk conducted on X, asking whether Americans “want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The informal survey drew over 1.2 million responses, with nearly two-thirds voting in favour of a new political alternative.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk declared on Friday.
Political Fallout with Trump
The formation of the America Party comes amid a deepening feud between Musk and President Trump, who recently pushed Republican lawmakers to pass what he dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—a sweeping domestic spending package projected to increase the US deficit by $3.4 trillion over the next decade.

Musk, a vocal critic of the bill, accused its Republican backers of betraying their fiscal promises. He branded the legislation as “debt slavery” and sharply condemned those who supported it.
In the wake of the public rift, President Trump reportedly threatened to strip federal contracts from Musk’s companies and raised the possibility of deporting the South African-born entrepreneur, who became a US citizen in 2002.
“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said last week when asked by reporters whether he would consider revoking Musk’s citizenship or expelling him from the country.
A New Political Force?
The launch of the America Party marks Musk’s most serious political move yet and could inject a disruptive element into the 2026 midterms. However, it remains unclear how the new party will operate, who will join, or whether it can mount a credible electoral challenge to the dominant Democratic and Republican parties.
Analysts say the billionaire’s name recognition and social media reach give him a unique platform, but caution that building a viable third party in the US political system is a historically uphill battle.
Still, Musk insists that his initiative reflects a growing public appetite for alternatives, writing: “The people are awake. The system is broken. Let’s fix it together.”
