Elon Musk, the owner of X, has threatened to suspend accounts caught participating in “engagement farming” on the social media platform.
This practice involves users artificially boosting their activity to increase revenue by monetizing the platform’s content creator program.
This comes as the 52-year-old billionaire grapples with eliminating fake accounts and bots from X, formerly known as Twitter, according to Nairametrics.
Engagement farming occurs when individuals post offensive or generic content to garner likes or comments, boost interaction, and gain more followers and monetary rewards.
“Any accounts found engaging in engagement farming will be suspended and traced to their source,” Musk announced on X on Friday.
Beyond simply increasing their chances of earning from the platform, individuals and businesses resort to engagement farming to falsely enhance their online visibility and credibility.
This includes utilizing fake accounts or technology to inflate metrics such as likes, retweets, and follower counts, among other tactics.
Such activity disrupts the natural flow of information on Elon Musk’s platform and diminishes the voices of authentic users with altered content.
X Crop aims to foster a genuine and organic online community where content is valued based on originality, which is why it is cracking down on these accounts.
Meanwhile, X users have been responding to the SpaceX founder’s warning.
The suspension of these accounts would be a significant relief to most users who have been inundated with meaningless posts for some time.
