Elon Musk has come under fire from House Republicans after making a controversial claim on social media suggesting that former President Donald Trump is linked to Jeffrey Epstein’s files — a move GOP lawmakers have slammed as inflammatory, unsubstantiated, and politically unhelpful.
In a Thursday post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk alleged: “Time to drop the really big bomb. [Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” The Tesla and SpaceX CEO concluded the post by urging readers to “mark this post for the future,” implying that the full truth would emerge in due course.
GOP lawmakers, however, were quick to condemn the statement, calling it reckless and devoid of merit.
“Hopefully, we never have to answer questions about tweets like that from Elon again,” said Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas), in a statement to Fox News Digital. “It’s not helpful.”

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) echoed the sentiment, saying simply: “Elon crossed the line today.”
The backlash from conservative lawmakers stems not only from the nature of Musk’s allegations but also from the timing, which coincided with Republican efforts to pass a budget reconciliation bill.
Musk had criticised the bill earlier in the day, calling it “Trump’s big, beautiful bill” and accusing Republicans of contributing to the ballooning national debt, which now approaches $37 trillion.
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) dismissed Musk’s tweet as unnecessary and misguided.
“There’s just no need for this,” he said. “Those conversations should be taking place behind closed doors.”
Other Republicans questioned the credibility of the claim, arguing that any serious connection between Trump and Epstein would already be public knowledge.
“If Joe Biden had Donald Trump in the Epstein logs, there’s no question it would have come out during the campaign,” Rep. Randy Fine (R-Florida) told Fox News Digital.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tennessee) pointed out the inconsistency in Musk’s past behaviour.
“If Elon believed this, why would he let his kid hang around Trump?” Burchett said. “Now he’s calling for Trump’s impeachment? It’s just off the deep end.”
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida), who heads a task force pushing for the declassification of federal investigations, including Epstein’s, also weighed in.
“I do not believe that President Trump is in the Epstein files the way it’s being implied,” Luna told Fox News. “This is why we continue to push for transparency.”
However, not all Republicans outright dismissed the need for scrutiny. Rep. Ralph Norman (R-South Carolina) stood out by calling for full disclosure.
“The Epstein files are bound to come out, and let it come out,” Norman said. “America has a right to know.”
The White House also weighed in through spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, attributing Musk’s outburst to frustration over the proposed legislation.
“This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted,” she said. “The President is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.”
Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska) took a more neutral stance, stating that he couldn’t comment on Musk’s motivations but emphasised the GOP’s fiscal focus.
“I can’t speak to Elon Musk’s motives,” Ricketts told Fox News. “But we are working to avoid a $4 trillion tax increase on the American people.”

A source familiar with the Trump-Epstein history said Musk’s comments were misleading, noting that Trump had banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago decades ago.
The source referenced the book The Grifter’s Club, which documented how Trump permanently barred Epstein from his Palm Beach club after he allegedly made advances toward a teenage girl.
“If Elon truly believed Trump was deeply tied to Epstein, why did he spend months praising him publicly?” the source asked.
“Elon has said he ‘loves him as much as a straight man can love a straight man.’ This isn’t a new revelation — the files were already released, and Trump’s name was included.”
As of now, Musk has not issued any clarification or follow-up statement. Fox News Digital reported that a request for comment sent to Musk’s office at Tesla had not yet received a response.
The incident comes amid heightened calls for transparency regarding Epstein’s connections and documents, as both political parties grapple with the implications of Musk’s high-profile accusation and its potential to reignite scrutiny of elite figures’ links to the disgraced financier.
