Ireland: Eleven Arrested Following Dublin City Centre Protests
Eleven individuals were apprehended for public order offences after two protests in Dublin city centre.
Anti-Immigration Protest:
The first demonstration centred around anti-immigrant sentiments began at the Garden of Remembrance at 2 pm. The participants then proceeded along O’Connell Street, culminating at the Custom House. Approximately 1,000 people participated in the protest.
Counter-Protest:
United Against Racism organised a counter-protest at the Spire, which mirrored the sentiments of the primary protest and was attended by hundreds.
Garda Intervention:
A notable Garda presence was observed throughout the area, strategically positioned as a barrier between the opposing protests. Over 300 law enforcement officers were mobilised to oversee the events.
Statement from Gardaí:
Chief Superintendent McMenamin, the Strategic Commander, emphasised the complexity of the policing operation, stating, “Today, a significant policing operation was deployed in Dublin City Centre.” Despite the adversarial atmosphere, particularly evident on O’Connell Street, the protests concluded predominantly peacefully.
McMenamin thanked the Dublin business community and public transport entities for their cooperation and support throughout the demonstrations.
