An easyJet flight from Alicante to Manchester was forced to make an unscheduled landing at London Gatwick Airport this morning following a mid-air medical emergency.
Flight EZY5521 was travelling over the south coast of Britain when the emergency was declared. The Airbus aircraft diverted from its original course and landed safely at Gatwick around 8:30 am on Sunday.
In a statement, an easyJet spokesperson confirmed: “Flight EZY5521 from Alicante to Manchester today, 25 May, was required to divert to London Gatwick due to a customer onboard requiring urgent medical attention. The passenger was met in London Gatwick by medical services, and the flight is planned to continue to Manchester.”
They added: “The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is always easyJet’s highest priority.”
Today’s incident comes just weeks after another easyJet flight, from Tenerife to Liverpool, was diverted on 25 March to Santiago–Rosalía de Castro Airport in Galicia, northern Spain, following another medical emergency.
In that case, a 67-year-old passenger was found unconscious, and attempts were made to revive them. Passengers were required to stay overnight before continuing their journey.
Earlier in March, a separate easyJet flight was also forced to make an emergency diversion after a confrontation erupted mid-flight over a child watching The Karate Kid at high volume. The flight had to be rerouted as tensions escalated 30,000 feet in the air.
EasyJet has yet to confirm any further details regarding the passenger’s condition involved in today’s emergency.
