An EasyJet flight traveling from Hurghada, Egypt, to Manchester, UK, was forced to make an emergency landing in Athens, Greece, after the pilot collapsed mid-flight
Passengers Panic as Crew Calls for Medical Assistance
The incident occurred approximately two hours into the journey when cabin crew rushed to the front of the aircraft, urgently calling for any medically trained passengers.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with crew members shouting for assistance.
Initially, many assumed a passenger was unwell, but it was later revealed that the person needing medical attention was the flight’s captain.
One passenger recounted the terrifying moment to Manchester Evening News, explaining that the crew announced the captain was unwell and that they would provide further updates.
As the situation unfolded, passengers grew anxious, with one individual reportedly requiring an oxygen mask due to a panic attack.
Emergency Landing in Athens
With the captain incapacitated, the co-pilot took control and performed a diversion to Athens International Airport, where emergency services were on standby.
According to one passenger, the landing was “rocky and rough,” causing further distress among those on board.
Upon landing, paramedics boarded the aircraft to assist the pilot, while the airline worked to manage the situation for the passengers.
EasyJet Issues Apology and Provides Assistance
A spokesperson for EasyJet confirmed the diversion, stating:
“Flight EZY2252 from Hurghada to Manchester was diverted to Athens due to the captain requiring medical assistance. The first officer successfully landed the aircraft following standard procedures, and the flight was met by paramedics upon arrival.“
As a result, passengers faced an overnight delay, with the airline arranging accommodation and meals where possible.
EasyJet apologised for the inconvenience and assured travellers they would resume their journey to Manchester the following day.
The airline also thanked passengers for their patience and understanding as they dealt with the unexpected medical emergency.
