Dundee, Scotland – A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a Zimbabwean-born scientist who was found fatally injured on a street in Dundee over the weekend.
Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, was discovered with serious injuries on South Road around 4:25 p.m. on Saturday. Despite emergency efforts by paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Scotland launched a murder investigation following a post-mortem examination. On Monday, Kyler Rattray appeared before Dundee Sheriff Court in connection with the case.
He made no plea to a single charge of murder and was remanded in custody. He is expected to return to court within the next eight days.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Dr Gomo was a graduate of the University of Dundee and had recently joined Scottish Water, where she worked as a senior service planner in the water resources planning team.
In a statement, Professor Simon Parsons, director of environment planning and assurance at Scottish Water, expressed the organisation’s grief:
“Everyone at Scottish Water, where Dr Fortune Gomo worked, is shocked and saddened by her death and we send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.
Fortune was an exceptional scientist… she had already become a highly valued and respected member of our team.”
Friends and former classmates in Zimbabwe also paid tribute to Dr Gomo, remembering her for both her academic excellence and her compassion. Angela Machonesa, who studied with her, wrote on Facebook:
“She was the kind of person you’d go to when you needed clarity, not just of mind, but of heart. She listened. She cared. She uplifted… Her path was written in the stars long ago. To serve. To lead. To heal.”
Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp confirmed the investigation remains active and said Dr Gomo’s family is receiving support from specialist officers. He urged the public not to speculate online as enquiries continue.
“I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public,” he said. “There will be an increased police presence in the area and we encourage anyone with concerns or information to speak with officers.”
