Dublin has introduced its first static speed camera, now operational on Crumlin Road in Dolphin’s Barn, as part of a targeted effort to improve road safety in high-risk areas.
Motorists detected driving above the legal speed limit at the site will receive a fixed charge notice.
The penalty includes a €160 fine and the addition of three penalty points to the driver’s licence.
Unlike average speed cameras, which monitor a vehicle’s pace over a stretch of road, the static system measures speed at a single point, making it effective in detecting instant speeding offences.
Gardaí confirmed Dolphin’s Barn was selected following a nationwide analysis aimed at reducing road casualties. The area has recorded a significant number of fatal and serious collisions over the past seven years.
According to authorities, the decision was supported by speed data and stakeholder feedback, which highlighted the need for stronger enforcement measures in the locality.
This follows the recent rollout of static speed cameras in County Limerick and County Meath earlier this year, as part of a broader strategy to reduce road deaths and improve driver compliance across Ireland.
