Dublin Man Sentenced for Sending Explicit Messages to Alleged 14-Year-Old

A 45-year-old man from Dublin, Keith Redmond, has been sentenced to two years in prison, with the final six months suspended, for attempting to disseminate sexually explicit material to a person he believed was a 14-year-old girl.

Redmond committed the offence for three months, during which he exchanged 83 pages of sexually explicit chat and supplied four obscene photos.

The sentencing took place at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after Redmond pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting, by electronic means, to disseminate sexually explicit material to a child between August 30 and December 3, 2022.

Judge’s Remarks:

During the sentencing on Thursday, Judge Orla Crowe emphasized the gravity of the offence, highlighting that it occurred over three months.

She considered aggravating factors such as Redmond’s knowledge of the decoy’s age and the explicit content of their conversations, spanning 83 pages and including four graphic images. Despite acknowledging mitigating factors such as Redmond’s early guilty plea and cooperation with authorities, Judge Crowe deemed the offence serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.

Targeted by UK-Based Group:

The court heard that Volunteers targeted Redmond for Predator Exposure, a UK-based group, who created a decoy profile named ‘Amber’. Their interactions began innocuously but escalated into sexually explicit exchanges, leading Redmond to send four graphic images. The defence argued that Redmond did not actively seek out underage girls and that the decoy initiated the interaction.
