M10News Report
Dublin City Council has issued an urgent warning to motorists about a parking ticket scam circulating in south Dublin, particularly in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area.
According to authorities, fake parking fines have been placed on several vehicles, demanding a €40 fee for so-called “illegal parking“. These fraudulent tickets appear highly convincing and falsely attribute an incorrect phone number and website to the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
One alarming feature of these fake fines is a QR code at the bottom, which directs unsuspecting motorists to a fake payment website that closely resembles the council’s official fines portal.
In a public alert shared on X (formerly Twitter), Dublin City Council advised drivers to remain vigilant and emphasized:
“Motorists should under no circumstances attempt to pay for parking using QR codes in the Dublin City Council area.”
Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating the scam, stating that numerous vehicles in the Dún Laoghaire area were targeted.
“These tickets are very plausible copies of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council parking fines,” a Garda spokesperson told M10 News.
“We are actively investigating the matter to identify those responsible for placing these fraudulent tickets and to track payments made to this fake fine payment site.”
Motorists are urged to remain cautious and immediately report any suspicious parking tickets to local authorities.
