Passengers at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2 were evacuated this morning in what officials have described as a “precautionary measure”.
The airport authority confirmed the move in a statement, stressing that safety remained its “absolute priority”.
Flights ‘temporarily impacted’
Officials warned that the evacuation could cause delays and cancellations for passengers travelling through the terminal today.
Travellers have been urged to check with their airlines directly for the latest flight updates.
Cause not disclosed
The airport has not given details on what triggered the evacuation, but officials said the measure was taken “out of an abundance of caution”.
A spokesperson added: “The safety and security of our passengers and staff is our absolute priority.”
Passengers moved outside
Footage shared on social media shows large crowds of passengers standing outside Terminal 2 after the order was given.
Several travellers reported being told to leave their belongings behind while the building was cleared.
No injuries reported
At this stage, there are no reports of injuries or medical emergencies connected to the incident.
Emergency services were seen at the terminal, but have not yet confirmed their role in the evacuation.
Not linked to a cyberattack
The airport confirmed there is “no suggestion” that the evacuation is connected to the cyberattack that disrupted operations at multiple European airports earlier today.
The hack affected check-in and boarding systems at several major hubs, forcing cancellations and delays.
Atmosphere ‘calm but tense’
One passenger waiting outside the terminal told Sky News the mood remained calm, but there was “uncertainty” about when flights would resume.
Another traveller said: “We were told nothing, just to leave immediately. People are just standing around waiting for news.”
Security checks
Airport security staff could be seen conducting sweeps of the building after passengers were moved outside.
Officials have not confirmed whether the evacuation was linked to a specific security alert.
Previous evacuations rare
Evacuations at Dublin Airport are uncommon but have occurred in the past due to unattended baggage or technical alerts.
The airport handled more than 30 million passengers last year, making it one of the busiest in Europe.
Further updates promised
Authorities said updates will be shared “as soon as possible” once investigations are complete.
Passengers have been urged to remain patient and follow the directions of airport staff.
Investigation underway
Irish police have not yet stated the evacuation, but are understood to be assisting airport officials.
The Department of Transport has also been briefed on the situation.
