Dubai police are investigating an incident in which two Western tourists filmed and mocked a Muslim woman wearing a niqab at a rooftop restaurant.
This act violates strict privacy and anti-defamation laws in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A 13-second video posted on social media shows the two women giggling as they record the unsuspecting woman dining with her partner.
One of the tourists can be heard laughing as she pans her phone across the restaurant to capture the couple. UAE laws strictly prohibit recording individuals without their consent, particularly when the act could harm their dignity or reputation or cause them public contempt.
The legal consequences of such actions in the UAE are severe. Violators can face at least six months in jail and fines of up to £100,000. Privacy breaches, including taking photos of someone’s home or car without permission, are also punishable offences in the country.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation online. A woman shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), calling for immediate action by Dubai authorities. “In Dubai, a non-Muslim European woman films a Gulf tourist and mocks her religion,” she wrote, questioning why the individuals involved had not yet been arrested or prosecuted. “Are there no laws to protect the dignity and privacy of Gulf tourists, prevent them from being photographed without consent, and stop such defamation? Where are human rights? Where is the respect for religious rituals?”
Dubai Police issued a statement confirming that the case has been referred to the relevant authorities for investigation. “Please note that the matter has been referred to the relevant authority,” the statement read.
Social media users have reacted strongly to the video, critiquing the tourists for disregarding UAE laws and religious or cultural traditions.
One user wrote: “I hope they file a lawsuit against these women. They film them right in front of your eyes and mock us. Where are we in this situation?”
This incident highlights the UAE’s firm stance on privacy and respect for cultural and religious practices. It also reminds visitors about the importance of adhering to local laws and traditions when travelling in the region.
