The search and rescue operation for TV presenter Dr. Michael Mosley has intensified on the Greek island of Symi as it entered its third day.
67-year-old TV doctor and documentary presenter went missing after embarking on a coastal walk during their holiday on the island.
Dr. Mosley’s wife, Dr. Clare Bailey, raised the alarm when he failed to return from St. Nikolas Beach at 7:30 PM. Despite the efforts of local authorities, his whereabouts remain unknown, and his tracks were reportedly lost.
A representative for Dr. Mosley told Metro.co.uk, “We have no further information yet and are sitting tight hoping for some good news.” The mayor of Symi, Eleftherios Papakalodoukas, expressed concerns about his disappearance, stating that it’s “impossible” that he is still in the area where he was last seen.
On Good Morning Britain, ITV presenter Kate Garraway described the situation as “very worrying.” Journalist Niki Kitsantonis, based in Greece, suggested that Dr. Mosley might have slipped on the rugged terrain, which has many high points where one could fall. The mayor also voiced fears that he might have been swept away at sea.
Adding to the urgency, an extreme heat warning has been issued for the area, with temperatures expected to reach 48°C (118°F) on Friday, June 7. The high temperatures have raised concerns about Dr. Mosley’s well-being if he is still outdoors.
An appeal for information was shared on a Symi community Facebook group, with friends expressing deep concern as hours passed since he was last seen. Local police have raised concerns about his safety, noting that he was out walking without his phone, making it difficult to track him. “There has been no trace of him,” a local police spokesperson said, adding that all potential scenarios are being investigated.
Dr. Mosley is a well-known figure on British TV, hosting various shows including Channel 4’s “Michael Mosley: Who Made Britain Fat?” and the BBC series “Trust Me, I’m A Doctor.” He also documented living with tapeworms for six weeks in “Infested! Living With Parasites” on BBC Four and writes a column for the Daily Mail.
Authorities have employed drones and a helicopter in the search efforts. Symi, part of the Dodecanese island chain, is located about 25 miles north of Rhodes. The island’s rugged terrain and high temperatures are challenging the search teams.
Fans of Dr. Mosley have taken to social media to share their well-wishes and hopes for his safe return. The extreme heat warning in the area adds to the urgency of finding him quickly.
The yellow warning for extreme high temperatures is in effect from 1 PM local time (11 AM BST) to 7 PM (5 PM BST) on Friday. As the search continues, the community and authorities remain hopeful for a positive outcome.
