Pop superstar Taylor Swift has officially endorsed Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election, marking a significant moment in the campaign.

The 34-year-old singer took to Instagram during the first debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump to share her support for the Democratic nominee.

Swift stated that Harris “fights for the rights and causes” that she believes need a strong advocate.

Swift’s endorsement came in the form of a post to her 283 million followers, in which she also referenced herself as a “childless cat lady,” a jab at Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance.

Vance had previously made controversial comments, calling leading Democrats “a bunch of childless cat ladies.” Swift’s message resonated quickly, earning nearly 10 million likes within 24 hours.

Trump responded to Swift’s endorsement during an interview on Fox & Friends, dismissing the singer’s decision.

“I was not a Taylor Swift fan,” Trump remarked, accusing Swift of being “very liberal” and suggesting that she might “pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

Trump’s campaign had also circulated AI-generated images falsely suggesting Swift’s support, which Swift condemned in her post.

She expressed concern over the dangers of AI and the spread of misinformation, emphasising the importance of transparency about her voting plans.

Meanwhile, Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk made waves with a strange response to Swift’s political statement. Musk, a known Trump supporter, wrote to X, “Fine Taylor … you win …

I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.” His bizarre comment received widespread criticism from social media users, who labelled the post as “creepy” and inappropriate.

Many Swift fans and others slammed Musk, with one user commenting, “Taylor wants precisely zero to do with you.”

Despite the backlash from Trump and Musk, Swift’s political influence remains strong. She has a history of mobilising voters, most notably last year when she encouraged her fans to register to vote, leading to record-breaking traffic on Vote.org.

In her recent Instagram post, Swift urged her followers to get involved in the election, reminding them to register and vote early.

She provided registration and voting information links, encouraging first-time voters to make informed decisions.

Stevie Nicks, the Fleetwood Mac legend, also supported Swift’s actions. Nick shared a photo of herself with her dog on X, referencing Swift’s words and urging fans to register to vote. Nicks signed her “Childless Dog Lady” post, echoing Swift’s nod to Vance’s controversial comments.

Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris comes as part of a broader trend of celebrity support for the Democratic candidate. Other notable names, including Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Megan Thee Stallion, and P! nk, have publicly supported Harris.

Given her ability to engage her massive fanbase, Swift’s influence and endorsement could play a pivotal role in the election.

The endorsement follows a dramatic first debate between Harris and Trump at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Harris presented herself as a candidate of hope, contrasting Trump’s rhetoric, which often included personal attacks.

Trump repeatedly criticised Harris for not solving America’s problems while in office and warned of potential consequences, including a “Third World War,” should she win the election.

Swift’s post has sparked considerable conversation across social media and beyond, with fans and critics weighing in on her political stance.
