Former President Donald Trump turned to prayer and expressions of gratitude during a campaign event in Georgia on Tuesday, reflecting on two recent assassination attempts he says he survived.

The 78-year-old former president took the stage in Savannah, thanking God for sparing his life.

“That was a lucky one,” Trump said as he recounted a July 13 attempt on his life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “But maybe not lucky,” he added, pointing to the sky, clasping his hands together, and mouthing “thank you.”

During the July incident, Trump was shot in the right ear by 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, who also killed rallygoer Corey Comparatore and wounded two others. Trump attributed his survival to a split-second glance at a chart moments before the shot was fired.

“My two [adult] sons are great shooters, and they said, ‘Dad, from 130 yards, a bad shooter couldn’t miss with that gun,’” Trump shared with his supporters.

He reiterated his praise for the immigration statistics chart he turned to look at, saying, “If I didn’t look to the right, I wouldn’t be here with you today, I guarantee you that.”

Trump even joked about his attachment to the chart, calling it his “all-time favorite,” before adding in a humorous tone, “I love that chart, I sleep with it every night. I kiss it.”

The second assassination attempt occurred on Sept. 15 at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Suspect Ryan Wesley Routh was caught by a Secret Service agent, who noticed the barrel of a gun poking through the bushes near the 6th green.

“This guy [the agent] was no games,” Trump recalled, praising the agent’s vigilance. “He sees a rifle, just a small part of a very big weapon, and you see the barrel coming out of very heavy shrubbery. I’m telling you, God was watching there too.”

Trump concluded his remarks by noting, “They only go after consequential presidents. We are consequential. We’re going to be even more consequential because we’re going to do things that nobody has ever been able to do in this country.”
