Donald Trump Jr. trolled President Biden and the Democrats this Halloween, dressing up as a “pile of garbage” in response to the president’s recent comment on his father’s supporters.

According to photos he posted on Instagram, former President Donald Trump’s eldest son donned a black plastic garbage bag with pieces of trash sticking out while trick-or-treating with his family on Thursday night.

“Embrace their hate and own it,” Trump Jr. wrote in the caption, adding, “I’m garbage like the rest of you deplorable and irredeemable!!! Love you all, hope you have a blast tonight.”

The costume was a reaction to remarks Biden made earlier in the week. During a campaign call with the Voto Latino Group, Biden criticised Trump’s recent rally at Madison Square Garden, where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, speaking in support of Trump, described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” Biden’s response condemned the comment: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonisation of Latinos is excessive, and it’s un-American.” Vice President Kamala Harris was simultaneously rallying near Ellipse in Washington, DC.

Biden’s comment quickly drew comparisons to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 description of Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables.” The backlash led the White House to attempt a “clean-up,” with an official transcript adding an apostrophe to “supporters” to imply Biden’s remark was aimed solely at Hinchcliffe.

Former President Trump also joined in on the trolling. On Wednesday, he arrived in Wisconsin for a campaign event in a garbage truck while wearing an orange safety vest. “This truck is in honour of Kamala and Joe Biden,” Trump told reporters upon arrival. He continued the theme by wearing the vest during his night’s speech in Green Bay.

The exchange has drawn attention to the rhetorical tension between Biden and Trump as both vie for support ahead of the upcoming election.
