A horrifying landslide in Colombia has claimed the lives of at least 23 people, as multiple cars on a busy highway were crushed under collapsing mud clumps last Friday afternoon. The mudslide, triggered by heavy rain on the road between Quibdo and Medellin in the Pacific province of Choco, also left at least 35 people injured, with an unknown number still missing.
The governor of Choco mentioned, ‘The extraction of bodies continues,’ highlighting the ongoing efforts to deal with the aftermath. Images vividly captured the moment a large piece of land dislodged from a mountain, falling onto several cars navigating the flooded road below. The road has since been closed by Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
Expressing solidarity, President Gustavo Petro stated that his government would provide all necessary support, acknowledging the incident as a ‘horrible tragedy.’
