Top Democrats are pressuring President Biden to increase his criticism of Trump and minimize discussions about his policy record, stating, ‘He needs to stop.’
According to CNN, several sources close to the White House who have discussed this with the Biden campaign believe that Biden’s policy achievements have not effectively connected with or persuaded voters.
These advisers have recommended that Biden focus on economic issues during the upcoming CNN Presidential Debate and confront Trump’s ties with corporate America and how his proposed policies could worsen inflation.
One major donor told CNN, “Imagine spending 50 years in politics and finally becoming the guy. You want people to know you’re doing an excellent job. I think Biden can’t help but talk about what a good job he’s done.”
The Biden campaign seems to have taken some of this advice to heart, launching a new advertisement ahead of the debate that suggests Trump has done little to assist middle-class families. This advertisement is part of a $50 million media campaign aimed at crucial battleground voters throughout June.
A May ABC News/Ipsos poll showed that more than 80% of respondents consider the economy and inflation crucial in their voting decisions. On these issues, Trump holds a 14-point advantage over Biden.
In a recent Fox News poll, one-third of voters described the economy as either excellent or good, the highest rating during Biden’s presidency, surpassing the previous high of 30% from last month and September 2021.
Furthermore, 59% of respondents feel they are either maintaining their financial status or getting ahead, an increase of five points since last summer, while 44% express optimism about the economy, up nine points from 2023.
Despite these positive indicators, economic sentiment remains mixed: 56% are pessimistic about the economy, four in 10 say they are falling behind financially, and two-thirds rate economic conditions as only fair or poor (68%).
