Reports have emerged of bomb threats and anti-Semitic statements targeting hotels involved in hosting the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago. Police, including K-9 units, conducted a thorough search of Nobu Hotel, which is set to host significant events, including the official nomination of Kamala Harris, but found no suspicious items.
The threats, which included claims of pipe bombs placed at Nobu Hotel, Hotel Chicago West Loop, Hyatt House Chicago West Loop, and the University District, were made public shortly before noon on Monday. Fox 32 political correspondent Paris Schutz shared images of police activity around North Peoria Street as the investigation unfolded.
The threats surfaced just hours before former President Barack Obama was scheduled to speak on the convention’s second day, with former First Lady Michelle Obama also set to address the attendees. On the convention’s opening night, President Joe Biden delivered an emotional farewell speech, urging voters to support Harris in the upcoming election against former President Donald Trump.
Protests have also intensified around the convention, with thousands marching nearby to express their discontent with the Biden administration’s stance on the Gaza conflict, calling for an end to the war.
The convention is set to conclude on Thursday with Harris’ keynote address, with additional speeches from former President Bill Clinton and Harris’ vice presidential running mate, Tim Walz, scheduled for Wednesday.
