Representative Lloyd Doggett of Texas has become the first sitting House Democrat to publicly urge President Biden to withdraw as the presumptive party nominee following last week’s debate.
Citing widespread dissatisfaction and concerns over Biden’s debate performance, Doggett emphasized the urgent need to prevent a second term for Donald Trump.

“President Biden should do the same,” Doggett asserted, highlighting the gravity of the decision.
Doggett expressed deep respect for Biden’s service and dedication to the nation, underscoring the critical importance of safeguarding democracy from potential authoritarian threats. He pointed to recent Supreme Court decisions and warned of the risks a re-empowered Trump administration poses.
Doggett’s call echoes a mounting chorus within the Democratic Party, including close Biden ally Rep. James Clyburn, who signalled support for Vice President Kamala Harris if Biden steps aside. Clyburn’s endorsement was pivotal in Biden’s 2020 primary success, underscoring his influence within party ranks.
While concerns over Biden’s age and debate performance have escalated, Democrats like Doggett remain focused on defeating Trump in 2024.
The debate’s aftermath has intensified discussions within the party about its path forward and the necessity of ensuring a robust electoral strategy.
Representative Doggett, who has served Texas since 1995, represents a district encompassing Austin, the state’s capital. The Biden-Harris campaign has been contacted for comment on Doggett’s statements, reflecting the ongoing dialogue within the Democratic Party as the 2024 election cycle unfolds.
