Afrobeats superstar Davido has urged black Americans to reconsider relocation to Nigeria to consider the country’s economic challenges.
The artist shared his views during an appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, addressing widespread concerns among black Americans following Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory in the United States.
Speculation has grown that some black Americans are exploring the idea of leaving the U.S. over fears of unfavourable policies under Trump’s leadership.
However, Davido painted a sobering picture of Nigeria’s current state, emphasising its deep-seated economic woes.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” the award-winning musician stated.
He pointed to critical issues plaguing the nation, including ineffective governance, a struggling exchange rate, and skyrocketing oil prices, which have exacerbated Nigeria’s economic struggles.
Davido elaborated on Nigeria’s oil sector paradox: “Imagine the country that produces oil paying more for it than a country importing oil.”
Despite his stark critique, Davido acknowledged his efforts as an ambassador for Nigeria, using his platform to highlight the country’s positive aspects while acknowledging its shortcomings.
“When I go home, and I am filming, I am not going to show the bad parts,” he explained, adding that Africa’s entertainment industry has played a vital role in reshaping global perceptions of the continent.
“Entertainment is one of the things that has made Africa look good. We do not have the best leader; that is a fact,” Davido said, underscoring the contrast between the cultural strides made by artists like himself and the country’s economic and political challenges.
The Afrobeats star’s comments have sparked conversation about the dual realities of Nigeria—a nation celebrated for its rich cultural exports yet mired in economic and political struggles.
