David Courell is taking over as the Ireland interim FAI CEO effective immediately. Jonathan Hill is on leave and officially leaves on April 30.
Courell, the association’s chief operating officer since February 2022, expressed honour and privilege in continuing the FAI’s positive work.
Courell stated, “It’s an honour to be asked to take on this post and a privilege to continue the positive work being carried out by the FAI.
I look forward to working with the Board, the talented senior leadership team, the FAI’s trusted partners, and our passionate colleagues to progress our strategic ambitions.”
FAI Chair Tony Keohane praised Courell’s deep understanding of the association’s operations, highlighting his suitability for the FAI during the interim period until a permanent CEO is appointed.
Staff at the FAI were informed of Hill’s departure during a morning meeting, highlighting the ongoing changes within the organization.
Hill’s tenure faced challenges, particularly surrounding issues like the controversy surrounding payment instead of holidays not taken.
FAI President Paul Cooke’s confidence in Hill was challenged during a recent hearing, reflecting the internal tensions within the organization. Hill’s departure has been under consideration for some time, with recent meetings leading to this decision.
The FAI confirmed Hill’s departure on April 30, appointing Courell as interim CEO while they conduct a structured search for a permanent replacement. Hill, alongside other key figures, had been involved in the search for a new Ireland manager, adding complexity to the ongoing transitions within the FAI.
While Hill expressed pride in the achievements during his tenure, including notable strides in gender equality and successful bids for hosting prestigious football events, his departure marks a significant transition period for the association.
Keohane acknowledged Hill’s contributions during challenging times, emphasizing his role in steering the association through difficult pandemic-related situations and leaving behind a more robust organizational framework.
The FAI expressed gratitude for Hill’s leadership and dedication, wishing him success in his future endeavours. Hill’s departure signals a new phase for the FAI as they navigate leadership changes and continue their efforts to foster growth and success in Irish football.
