Cristiano Ronaldo says he has turned down multiple offers to play at this summer’s Club World Cup, and admits it would be “very difficult” to ever play alongside Lionel Messi.
The 40-year-old, whose contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr is set to expire this month, confirmed he had received invitations from various teams competing in the tournament.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously hinted at talks involving Ronaldo and Club World Cup teams, fuelling speculation over a potential move.
But the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star appears to have ruled it out.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Ronaldo said: “It’s irrelevant, at this moment it doesn’t make sense to talk about other things other than the national team.”
He acknowledged receiving “a lot of invitations,” but added: “It’s a decision that has practically been made on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup.”
Despite earlier indications that his time in Saudi Arabia might be ending, Ronaldo is now expected to sign a contract extension with Al-Nassr.

He was also asked about the prospect of joining forces with long-time rival Lionel Messi, who is due to captain Inter Miami at the expanded FIFA Club World Cup this summer.
“You know I have a lot of affection for Argentina, my wife is from there,” Ronaldo said. “I have already been invited to play in the Club World Cup for an Argentine club.”
“I’ve never been to Argentina, I want to go. But I think it is very difficult.”
“I have affection for Messi, we were rivals for many years,” he said. “I remember that before he didn’t speak any English. I don’t know if he does now. I translated for him at a gala when they were explaining things to us.”

“He has always treated me well and respected me, as I respect him. I find it very difficult, but you never know.”
Ronaldo has not confirmed whether this summer’s international duty with Portugal will mark the end of his national team career.
