President Idriss Deby of Chad met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday. Putin praised Deby for his efforts in stabilizing Chad and expressed satisfaction with the successful constitutional referendum. Putin also anticipated forthcoming high-level elections.
During the brief televised encounter, Putin extended condolences for a military plane crash near Ukraine, resulting in the tragic loss of 74 lives, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war.
President Deby expressed his sincere condolences for the unfortunate incident. He took power in 2021 after a coup following his father’s death and has been leading Chad through a period of transformation.
Although Chad has traditionally been heavily influenced by France in the region, recent diplomatic developments suggest a potential shift towards stronger ties with Russia. This comes at the same time as Niger’s prime minister’s visit to Moscow, which resulted in a significant agreement to improve military relations.
The evolving geopolitical landscape in the Sahel region suggests a strategic interest from Putin in building connections with Chad, marking a notable geopolitical shift in the region.
