Céline Dion, the legendary singer battling a rare neurological condition called stiff person syndrome, made a surprise appearance at the Grammys 2024 on Sunday night. Not only did she present the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift, but she also sang with Grammy-nominated songwriter Sonyaé in a video taken backstage.
The clip, which Sonyaé shared on Instagram, showed the two artists exchanging vocals and smiles while being cheered on by onlookers. Dion looked radiant in a white dress and an orange jacket, while Sonyaé wore a black suit and a hat.
Dion’s impromptu performance was her first time singing in public in nearly four years since she announced her diagnosis in December 2022. Stiff person syndrome is a rare disorder that causes muscle stiffness and spasms, making it difficult to move and perform. Dion cancelled her “Courage” world tour in May 2023 to focus on her health and recovery.
“I’m working hard to build back my strength, but touring can “It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even be very difficult even when you’re 100%,” Dion wrote on Instagram.” though it breaks my heart, we should cancel everything now until I’m ready to be back on stage again.”
Dion’s fans were thrilled to see her at the Grammys, where she received a standing ovation from the audience, including Swift, who hugged her and thanked her for presenting the award. Dion also gave an inspiring speech about the power of music and the importance of never taking it for granted.
“Those who have been blessed enough to be here at the Grammy Awards must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and people worldwide,” Dion said. “I want you all to know I’m not giving up… and can’t wait to see you again!”
