Celine Dion, the legendary singer who has won six Grammy awards, made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday night after announcing a career hiatus due to her diagnosis of stiff person syndrome (SPS). This rare neurological disorder causes muscle stiffness and spasms.
The 55-year-old Canadian celebrity was joined by her 23-year-old son René-Charles Angélil as she took the stage to present the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift.
This marked Swift’s fourth win in that category, surpassing Stevie Wonder’s and Frank Sinatra’s previous record.
Dion, who wore a stunning golden-orange coat over a pink gown, received a standing ovation from the audience and expressed her gratitude and joy for being part of the music industry.
“I want to thank you all! I love you all so much. You all look so beautiful. When I say I am happy to be here, please know that “I mean it with all of my heart,” she said. “Those who have been fortunate enough to attend.” the Grammy Awards should never forget the tremendous amount of love and joy that music brings to our lives and people worldwide.”
She also recalled when she received the same award 27 years ago from Diana Ross and Sting and praised the nominees for their outstanding work.
Dion made a rare public appearance recently, which was significant since she disclosed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with SPS. This condition affects just one in a million people; unfortunately, there is no known cure. SPS is characterized by progressive muscle rigidity and painful spasms that can hinder breathing, movement, and speech.
Dion, who has sold over 200 million albums worldwide, is currently receiving treatment and therapy to manage her symptoms and cope with the emotional toll of her illness. She is fortunate to have the support of her family, friends, and fans, who have been sending her messages of love and encouragement during this difficult time.
In December, her sister, Claudette Dion, told a Canadian TV network that Celine was working hard to recover and hoped to return to the stage someday.
“It’s certain that, in our dreams and hers, the idea is to return to the stage. In which state? I do not know. The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle,” she said.
Dion, who lost her husband René Angélil to cancer in 2016, has been open about her faith and resilience. She inspires many with her positive attitude and love for music.
During an interview, she said, “I am uncertain of what the future holds, but I am currently singing and enjoying life”.
