DUBLIN – A Canadian tourist who was critically ill following an assault on Dublin’s O’Connell Street has died in hospital. Neno Dolmajian (41), a single man from Montreal, succumbed to his injuries at the Mater Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Dolmajian was attacked in the early hours of June 23rd and has been unresponsive since. His father and sister travelled from Canada to be by his side. Following his death, a postmortem will be conducted, which is expected to upgrade the investigation from assault causing harm.
The Garda investigation has been ongoing for the past ten days and led to four arrests, with two men charged in connection with the attack.
Madalin Ghiuzan (23), of Summerhill Parade, Dublin 1, faces two counts of assault causing harm on Cathal Brugha Street and O’Connell Street Upper on June 23rd. Originally from Romania, Ghiuzan appeared at Dublin District Court last Monday, aided by an interpreter. Garda Sergeant Sean McCarthy reported that Ghiuzan made no reply to the charges and, due to the severity of the offences and flight risk concerns, bail was denied.
Ionut Danca (24), a Romanian national residing at Rathdown Square, North Circular Road, Dublin 7, is also charged with assault causing harm to Dolmajian on June 23rd. Appearing at Dublin District Court last Friday, Judge Bryan Smyth denied bail, citing flight risk concerns.
Detective Sergeant Eoghan Byrne testified that Danca was allegedly with a group on Cathal Brugha Street when Dolmajian approached and engaged them in conversation. It is alleged that a group member struck Dolmajian, leading to a second encounter on O’Connell Street. The group’s hostility culminated in Dolmajian being knocked to the ground and receiving a “running kick” to his face, described by the detective as a full-force blow.
