Hamilton Police have arrested two men from Britain in connection with an alleged roofing repair scam that targeted seniors and vulnerable individuals in the community.
The arrests were made on Wednesday, August 14, following a fraud report from a homeowner residing near Barton Street and Kenilworth Avenue.
According to the police, the two men approached the victim, who claimed that her roof had issues that required immediate repair. The suspects were using a company name that closely resembled that of a legitimate roofing business, which added credibility to their approach.
Using high-pressure tactics, the suspects convinced the homeowner to make a substantial down payment for the supposed repair work. After receiving the initial payment, the men returned to the victim, demanding additional money for further repairs.
The victim, suspecting foul play, contacted the police. Officers were at the victim’s home when the suspects returned to collect the additional funds, leading to their immediate arrest.
Investigations reveal that the suspects may have entered Canada in late June 2024. Hamilton Police believe there could be more victims similarly targeted by this scam.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this case to contact Hamilton Police at 905.546.3840 or contact Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing investigation.
