Camila Giorgi’s abrupt retirement from tennis has taken a dramatic and unexpected turn.
The 32-year-old Italian, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2018 and was once ranked as high as No. 26 globally, is now embroiled in a scandal involving unpaid rent and stolen furniture.
According to her landlord in Calenzano, Tuscany, Giorgi had not paid rent for six months and allegedly took furniture when she left for the United States.
The landlord alleges that Giorgi, who recently retired to pursue a career in lingerie modelling, caused substantial damage by taking Persian rugs, fine furniture, and an antique half-ton table.
Estimated damages amount to €50,000 to €100,000 (approximately $54,000 to $108,000).
“They made half of our furniture disappear,” the landlord told La Repubblica, as reported by The Sun.
He recounted how Giorgi’s father dismissed his request to return the items, saying they were of little value.
The landlord described the behavior as “hateful” and expressed frustration over the loss’s economic and emotional impact, noting the personal significance of the missing items.
Giorgi’s father, mother Claudia and brothers Leandro and Amadeus also reportedly left for the U.S. The landlord expressed his desire to recover the furniture despite losing hope of reclaiming the unpaid rent.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Giorgi fled Italy due to issues with her tax returns, making her a person of interest to Italian law enforcement.
Giorgi confirmed her retirement from tennis on May 12 via Instagram, thanking her fans for their support and promising to share more about her plans.
