Dublin commuters are set to benefit from a major expansion of 24-hour bus services as BusConnects launches Phase 7 of its ambitious network redesign this Sunday.
The phase is described as the most geographically extensive rollout in the programme’s history, promising wider coverage, increased frequency, and improved connectivity across the capital.
Phase 7: A Major Upgrade for Dublin Public Transport
Phase 7 will expand the city’s bus network by 14% in route coverage, as part of a broader BusConnects plan to ultimately increase bus kilometres by 35%. Dublin Bus officials say the changes will better link residential suburbs, commercial hubs, hospitals, and educational institutions, making the city more accessible and reducing reliance on private cars.
“This is really about connecting more people to more places,” said Dublin Bus spokesperson Blake Boland. “It’s not just updating timetables or adding stickers – it’s a comprehensive upgrade to how the city moves.”
Phase 7 will also adjust and consolidate existing routes, offering more frequent services along key corridors and filling coverage gaps in underserved areas. For example, commuters in the northern suburbs will see enhanced links to central Dublin, while southern districts gain improved evening and night-time connections.
Introducing Three 24-Hour Routes
Among the most notable changes are three fully 24-hour routes, the F1, F2, and 80, along with the 24 route operating up to 20 hours a day. These routes will primarily run along major city corridors, including the ‘F Spine’, a central artery connecting northern and southern Dublin before branching out to peripheral areas.
“These routes will support shift workers, students, and anyone travelling late at night,” Boland said. “It’s about enabling Dublin to function as a modern European capital, where public transport is available when people need it most.”
Passengers can expect increased frequency, reduced waiting times, and enhanced reliability, particularly for those travelling during off-peak hours or for late-night employment.
Supporting the Night-Time Economy
Experts believe the expanded 24-hour network could have a significant economic impact. Dublin’s nightlife, hospitality, and healthcare sectors rely heavily on workers commuting outside traditional hours.
A more reliable bus network helps employees travel safely, reduces stress, and encourages late-night business activity.
“Public transport plays a crucial role in enabling Dublin’s night-time economy,” said urban mobility consultant Dr. Aisling Kelly. “With safer and faster bus services at night, more people will choose buses over cars, which benefits both the economy and the environment.”
Environmental Benefits and Ireland’s Climate Goals
The BusConnects expansion aligns with Ireland’s climate objectives, as the transport sector remains the country’s second-largest source of carbon emissions. The Climate Change Advisory Council has repeatedly called for greater investment in sustainable public transport, warning that without action, Ireland will struggle to meet its 2030 and 2050 emissions targets.
By increasing bus coverage and frequency, officials hope to encourage more commuters to leave cars at home, reduce traffic congestion, and lower emissions from private vehicles.
Estimates suggest that a fully implemented 24-hour bus network could reduce Dublin’s urban traffic emissions by several percentage points annually.
Practical Tips for Passengers
Residents looking to benefit from the new services are encouraged to:
- Check updated timetables for the F1, F2, 80, and 24 routes.
- Plan off-peak journeys to avoid congestion on high-demand routes.
- Use real-time tracking apps for live bus locations and expected arrival times.
- Consider transfers along the F Spine for more efficient travel across the city.
Dublin Bus also advises passengers to prepare for adjustments to existing routes, as Phase 7 may slightly alter the stopping points of some current services.
Future Phases and Long-Term Impact
BusConnects plans to continue rolling out new phases over the next several years, each expanding coverage and integrating new technologies, such as electric buses and improved digital ticketing. The programme is part of Dublin’s broader goal of becoming a world-class, sustainable city, with accessible, safe, and reliable public transport for all residents.
“We’re creating a city where more people can get around easily without needing a car,” Boland said. “Phase 7 is a step towards a modern, environmentally friendly Dublin.”
The launch of Phase 7 marks a significant milestone for Dublin commuters and underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
