Melissa, overwhelmed with fear during the ordeal, shared her thoughts of despair, fearing she would never see her family or twin sister again. Her initial concern even extended to the logistics of repatriating her body to the UK. However, thanks to Georgia’s heroic intervention, Melissa’s life was saved, and the sisters emerged from the traumatic experience with an unbreakable bond.

The crocodile swam away but returned moments later to attack Melissa again, this time grabbing her left foot and biting her upper thigh and bottom. Georgia fought back each time by punching the animal with all her might.

Despite feeling exhausted, Georgia continued to punch the crocodile relentlessly.

‘It felt like the attack lasted forever. I was afraid it would return, and we would both perish.’

After some time, the crocodile retreated, and the girls were rescued by a boat. Melissa was covered in blood and vomiting a mixture of blood and dirty water.

Due to her injuries, Melissa developed sepsis and had to be placed in a medically induced coma for recovery.

‘But then something like this happens, and it all comes back, reminding me that it did happen; It’s an unbelievable story.

‘When you think about it, it sounds like a horror movie, but it’s a part of our lives.’

In addition to the prestigious award, police officer Zach Printer is also being honoured for his courageous actions when he confronted gunman Jake Davison unarmed on 12 August 2021 in Keyham, Plymouth.

Davison tragically killed his mother, Maxine, 51, and then proceeded to shoot three-year-old Sophie Martyn, her father, Lee, 43, Stephen Washington, 59, and Kate Shepherd, 66, in a horrific mass shooting.

PC Printer was assisting Mrs Shepherd when he noticed Davison with a firearm.

He immediately ran towards the 22-year-old, instructing him to stop in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Davison then took his own life.
