Virginia McCullough, 36, has confessed to the murder of her parents, John and Lois McCullough, whose bodies were found in their home five years after their deaths.

McCullough pleaded guilty to the charges today at Chelmsford Crown Court. The tragic events took place between June 17 and June 20, 2019.

However, the couple’s remains were not discovered until September 2023, when concerned neighbours contacted Essex Police regarding the couple’s wellbeing.

Authorities discovered the remains at the McCullough residence on Pump Hill, Chelmsford. An inquest revealed that Lois McCullough died from stab wounds to the chest, while the cause of John McCullough’s death remains under investigation.

During the court appearance, McCullough, dressed in a grey top, confirmed her name, entered guilty pleas for both counts and acknowledged the judge’s remarks. She displayed no visible emotion throughout the proceedings.

Judge Christopher Morgan addressed McCullough, stating, “You will understand that a single sentence can be passed upon you in these circumstances.

Consideration, however, has to be given to the minimum term. The sentence will take place on the 10th and 11th of October. You will be remanded in custody, and I will direct you to be produced in court. This is not a case for you to appear on the video link.”

McCullough responded, “I understand,” and thanked the judge at the hearing’s conclusion.

No additional details about the case or the ongoing investigation were disclosed during the brief court session. McCullough is scheduled for sentencing on October 10 and 11.
