A British tourist, Shanghaman Gowribalan, 24, has been reported missing in Thailand, sparking a frantic search operation by scuba divers in the Surat Thani province. Gowribalan is believed to have fallen into the deepest part of a reservoir on Sunday morning while his friend sought help from authorities.
Scuba divers are diligently combing through the 160ft deep waters using sonar technology in hopes of locating Gowribalan. Despite extensive efforts, he has not been found yet. The operation was briefly suspended due to safety concerns arising from the dam’s depth and the frigid water conditions.
Worapote Lomlim, the local park director, revealed that initial investigations suggest the tourists violated park regulations. Kayak paddling in the reservoir requires prior registration to obtain safety equipment such as paddles and life jackets, which the tourists reportedly did not adhere to.
Authorities have mobilized a multi-agency search and rescue team, including experts from neighbouring provinces, to bolster the search efforts. The provincial governor has ordered additional support for the comprehensive search operation.
Boonruang Longlaluad, the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office chief, emphasized the importance of investigating the incident’s circumstances. Concerns have been raised about the tourists’ lack of registration and failure to wear life jackets, prompting a thorough inquiry by the head of the Khao Sok National Park.
As the search and rescue mission continues, hopes remain high for the safe recovery of Shanghaman Gowribalan. The collaborative efforts of scuba divers and authorities underscore the urgency and determination in finding him.
