A 23-year-old British tourist is in a critical condition after reportedly diving headfirst into a swimming pool at a hotel in Ibiza.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the town of San Antonio. Authorities believe the man either fell or jumped into the water, striking his head on the bottom of the pool.
He sustained serious injuries, including a cervical spinal cord injury, a fractured sixth vertebra, and head trauma.
The tourist was immediately rushed to the private Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic, where he underwent emergency surgery performed by a neurosurgery team.
A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed on Tuesday that the young man remains in intensive care, describing his condition as “very serious.”
“We do not have detailed information about the exact circumstances surrounding the accident,” the hospital said in a statement.
This is the latest in a series of alarming incidents involving British nationals on the Balearic Islands this summer.
Earlier this season, 19-year-old Gary Kelly — a promising hockey player from Dundee — died after falling from a hotel balcony at Ibiza Rocks, also in San Antonio.
Following his death, Ibiza Rocks suspended all scheduled events, marking him as the third British tourist to die there this year.
Local authorities have not confirmed whether alcohol or other factors contributed to the latest incident, and an investigation is ongoing.
