British Teen Footballer in Critical Condition After Being Found at Bottom of Swedish Pool
A British teenage footballer is in critical condition after being found at the bottom of a swimming pool in Sweden.
The boy, believed to be around 16 or 17 years old, was participating in the Gothia Cup, the world’s largest youth football tournament.
He was pulled from the water at Nolhaga Parkbad in Allingsås, located about 25 miles northeast of Gothenburg yesterday.
Pool staff administered CPR until paramedics arrived and transported him by helicopter to Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg, where he remains in serious condition, according to MailOnline.
The swimming pool has been closed while police investigate the incident. The boy, who has not been named, was part of one of the 128 English teams competing in this year’s tournament.
Niklas Ehnfors, head of communications at Allingsås council, reported that Swedish players at the pool initially found and retrieved the teenager. He added that CPR was performed immediately, continuing until emergency services arrived.
This incident marks the second consecutive year a drowning has occurred at Nolhaga Parkbad during the Gothia Cup. Last year, a similar tragedy occurred involving a boy in his early teens.
Ehnfors remarked on the unusual nature of the repeated incidents, stating, “It feels like lightning has struck twice in the same place.” The situation is currently under review, with authorities examining any potential links to the previous year’s accident.
The Metro has reached out to the Foreign Office for further comment.
