A 26-year-old British woman and mother of three, Demi Agoglia, has tragically died after undergoing a Brazilian butt-lift operation in Turkey. She complained of chest pains days after the procedure and died on the same day she was set to return home to Salford, Greater Manchester. Her heartbroken family and partner had advised her not to go through with the surgery.

According to her brother Carl, Demi had previously undergone ‘botched’ dental work and another procedure. Despite the warnings from her loved ones, she flew to Turkey for the surgery. She is believed to have suffered a series of heart attacks caused by a fat embolism. Her family is warning others against going to Turkey for surgery, and her brother has urged anyone considering it not to go through with it.
What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves transferring fat from the abdomen, hips, lower back, or thighs to the buttocks. The surgery aims to enhance the size, shape, and contour of the buttocks, resulting in a more hourglass-shaped figure. In some cases, the procedure can also result in a smaller waist if the fat comes from the abdomen or lower back.
The surgery involves removing fat from the donor areas using liposuction. The fat is then processed and purified before being injected into the buttocks. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes two to four hours.
Risks and Complications
Like any surgical procedure, a Brazilian Butt Lift comes with risks and potential complications. One significant risk is fat embolization, where fat enters the bloodstream and travels to the heart or lungs, potentially leading to blockages in the arteries or veins. Other risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, and asymmetry.
In 2022, The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) issued new guidelines to members following a four-year halt on BBLs being performed in the UK due to concerns over the death rate. The guidelines recommend surgeons only inject fat below the skin rather than plunging into muscles like a BBL.
Fatalities
Unfortunately, Brazilian Butt Lift surgeries have proved fatal before. In 2019, Leah Cambridge died after undergoing the procedure in Turkey. Melissa Kerr also died hours after her procedure.
Recently, a 26-year-old British mother of three, Demi Agoglia, died just days after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift surgery in Turkey. Her family is urging others not to undergo the procedure due to its high risk.
