A British Airways flight bound for Texas from London was forced to turn back shortly after crossing into Canadian airspace, subjecting passengers to an unexpected and lengthy journey.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner departed Heathrow Airport at 9:27 am on Monday and reversed course, landing in London at 6:54 am on Tuesday, after flying approximately 7,779 kilometres over nine hours and 27 minutes.

The decision to return to London was reportedly made due to a minor technical issue, with British Airways explaining that their technicians and facilities were more readily available at Heathrow. A spokesperson for the airline stated, “The flight returned to London Heathrow as a precaution due to a minor technical issue.

This incident follows another recent emergency involving British Airways, where a flight bound for Oslo from Heathrow was diverted to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol due to smoke filling the cockpit mid-flight.

The Airbus A320, carrying up to 190 passengers, landed immediately after encountering the issue 90 minutes into the flight, citing “safety fears” for the diversion. Passengers disembarked through the rear door furthest from the cockpit following the landing.

British Airways continues to address safety concerns and maintain operational integrity amidst these incidents that affect its services.
