A high-stakes summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could take place as early as next week, according to a senior White House official speaking to NBC News.
The potential meeting follows recent talks in Moscow between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and the Russian president. Putin is said to have expressed a willingness to meet Trump directly.
Trump, in turn, reportedly told European allies that he is preparing to meet Putin in person soon to explore the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
However, Trump has also conveyed that he would like Putin to hold a separate meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as part of the process—though it remains unclear if the Kremlin will agree to that condition.
No location for the Trump-Putin summit has yet been finalised, and US officials stress that the timeline could shift. Multiple venues are under review, the White House source added.

The revelation comes just days before a self-imposed Trump deadline to broker “substantive progress” on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump had previously warned that tougher sanctions on Russian oil would follow if Moscow failed to cooperate.
Earlier today, Zelenskyy said US pressure was “working,” claiming Russia was showing signs of being “more inclined” to discuss a ceasefire.
The New York Times also reported Trump may prefer to meet Putin first, with a possible three-way meeting involving Zelenskyy to follow.
