Boy George, the legendary singer of Culture Club, has sparked controversy with his new single “Religion”, which features a strikingly similar cover art to Kylie Minogue’s latest album “Tension”.
Fans of the Australian pop icon accused Boy George of plagiarism and disrespect. At the same time, the British musician defended himself by claiming he was “recycling” and “fascinated by how everything is connected”.
Vegas.
The cover art for both “Religion” and “Tension” shows the faces of the singers tinted green with a red and yellow background, as well as the same fonts for the titles. The resemblance was quickly noticed by social media users, who called out Boy George for copying Minogue’s style. Some even referred to him as “scum” and “pathetic” for his apparent lack of originality.
Boy George, however, did not seem bothered by the criticism, instead responding with sarcasm and defiance. He tweeted that he was “recycling everything” and that “it’s all the rage”.
He also compared himself to Tesla, the inventor and engineer, and said that he was making his point ” abstractly” and that there was “always creative method in his madness”.
Minogue, who released her album “Tension” in November 2023, has not commented on the issue publicly. The two singers have been friends for a long time and have shared the stage several times.
When she was a teenager, Minogue recently revealed that the first concert she ever attended was Boy George and Culture Club in Melbourne, Australia.
“Religion” is Boy George’s first solo single since 2019 and is part of his upcoming album “Geminis Don’t Read The Manual”, which is expected to be released later this year. Minogue’s “Tension” is her 16th studio album and has been praised by critics and fans for its disco-inspired sound and upbeat vibe.
