A British Airways flight from Bermuda to London encountered a bomb threat, leading to the evacuation of passengers at Bermuda’s LF Wade International Airport, the island’s sole international airport.

The incident occurred during the evening of May 5, 2024, when passengers were asked to disembark the flight, which was scheduled to depart at 8:50 pm local time. The evacuation took place around 9:30 pm local time.

Police authorities were alerted to the bomb threat via e-mail, prompting the initiation of emergency landing protocols at the airport. As a precaution, the Causeway and Kindley Field Road near the airport were temporarily closed to traffic while authorities conducted thorough searches of the premises.

The flight crew on board the Boeing 777-200ER aircraft had alerted air traffic control (ATC) by squawking 7700, the air code indicating an emergency. This led to the cancellation of the flight’s takeoff clearance.

The aircraft, which had already taxied onto the runway for takeoff at 9 pm, came to a halt near Cave Island approximately 40 minutes later, as the flight monitoring service FlightRadar24 reported.

After ensuring the airport’s safety and receiving an all-clear, regular operations resumed, and traffic flow returned to normal. Authorities thanked the public for their cooperation during the emergency road closure.

Fortunately, all passengers were reported safe and unharmed following the incident. A British Airways spokeswoman reiterated the airline’s commitment to passenger safety, stating that standard procedures were followed to disembark passengers and ensure their well-being. The airline’s teams actively assist passengers and crew members to facilitate their onward travel arrangements.
