Over 50 passengers were injured, and the aircraft’s ceiling sustained damage when those without seatbelts were thrown against it.

At first, LATAM Airlines attributed the incident to a ‘technical event during the flight resulting in strong movement.’ Later, the Chilean airline clarified that the plane experienced ‘significant turbulence during the flight,’ the cause is currently under investigation.

Boeing recommended that airlines inspect cockpit seats during maintenance, advising on disabling seat motor movements. The aircraft manufacturer directed inquiries regarding the LATAM Airlines incident to investigating authorities.

According to The Wall Street Journal, initial findings from the investigation suggest that a flight attendant serving a meal in the cockpit accidentally activated a seat switch, leading to the pilot colliding with the controls and causing a nose dive.

Boeing faces increased scrutiny following multiple incidents. In January, an Alaska Airlines 737 Max lost a panel over Oregon, resulting in damage. Similarly, a United Airlines Boeing 737-824 experienced panel loss mid-flight, with pilots unaware until later.

United Airlines announced intentions for a comprehensive inspection, repairs, and an investigation into the damage’s cause.
