Former Attorney General Bill Barr has called on federal and state prosecutors to drop all criminal cases against President-elect Donald Trump following his decisive 2024 election victory.
Speaking on Fox News Wednesday, Barr argued that the Americans, fully aware of the allegations against Trump, have chosen him as their leader for the next four years. Barr contended that Attorney General Merrick Garland and state prosecutors should “respect the people’s decision” and move to dismiss the cases.
Among the pending cases, Trump, 78, was convicted of 34 felony counts in May for falsifying business records related to hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, stemming from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.
He also faces an election interference case in Georgia, a federal case concerning 2020 election allegations, and an appeal in a federal case dismissed in July over handling White House documents.
Barr, who served as Trump’s attorney general from 2019 to 2020, argued that further prosecution “would serve no legitimate purpose” and would distract the incoming administration.
Emphasising national unity, he urged Garland and state prosecutors to prioritise the “public interest” by helping the country move forward without further legal proceedings.
