An Australian news network apologized for allegedly modifying a photo of a female MP to make her appear more revealing before her appearance on a program.
Georgie Purcell, the MP for Northern Victoria, raised concerns after noticing modifications to her image for promoting Nine News Melbourne’s Monday night news bulletin.
The politician claimed that the picture had been manipulated to enhance her features, including “enlarged boobs” and a more revealing outfit. The network admitted to an error in the editing process, which they described as “graphic.”
Sharing both the modified and original images on social media, Purcell expressed her dismay, highlighting the disparity in treatment between male and female MPs. She pointed out that the edited image failed to represent her, mainly omitting her tattooed stomach accurately.
Hugh Nailon, director of Nine News Melbourne, issued a formal apology, attributing the image alterations to an “automation by Photoshop.” Nailon regretted the error, emphasising it did not meet the network’s editorial standards.
He extended an unreserved apology to Purcell for any distress caused.
Purcell, aged 31, made headlines in 2022 when she won her seat as an Animal Justice Party MP, becoming one of the youngest women elected to the Legislative Council in Victoria.
Throughout her political career, she has been outspoken about facing online abuse related to her tattoos and bold parliamentary attire.
Purcell appeared on the Nine News program on Monday evening to discuss the controversial decision by state leader Jacinta Allan regarding duck hunting.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges faced by women in politics, including issues related to image manipulation and online harassment. The network’s apology highlights the importance of upholding editorial integrity and respecting the dignity of public figures.
