Irish sprinter Sharlene Mawdsley’s disqualification from the World Sports Indoor Championships in Glasgow has been upheld, despite calls for its reversal, in a contentious decision that has sparked controversy among the sports community.

Mawdsley, who had delivered an impressive performance in the 400m semi-finals, was later disqualified for an alleged lane infringement.

The ruling came after the Austrian team appealed, claiming Mawdsley had impeded their athlete, Susanne Gogl-Walli, on the final turn.

Athletics Ireland and Mawdsley’s supporters disagreed with the decision, arguing that the contact was incidental and did not alter the race’s outcome. They contend that such contact is not uncommon in indoor races and that Mawdsley had already established a clear lead at the time of the incident.

Despite a counter-appeal, the disqualification was not overturned, leaving Mawdsley out of the final and her supporters calling for a review of the rules governing indoor track events.

Paul McNamara, the director of High Performance at Athletics Ireland, expressed disappointment over the decision, emphasizing that the contact was minimal and did not warrant a disqualification.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the need for clear and consistent rule enforcement in the sport, with many advocating for a review of the regulations to prevent similar situations.
