Asia Sport: Son Heung-min Leads South Korea Squad Eyeing Victory in Asian Cup
South Korea’s national football team is poised to make a strong bid for victory in the upcoming Asian Cup tournament, commencing on January 12 in Qatar.
The club hopes to end its 64-year trophy drought, which began in 1960 under the direction of coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Notably, Tottenham Hotspur’s prolific striker, Son Heung-min, takes the captaincy, with Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan and Paris Saint-Germain offensive midfielder Lee Kang-in supporting him.
Expressing unwavering confidence, Klinsmann emphasized the hunger and determination evident in his team’s eyes. He highlighted the squad’s robust foundation, comprising healthy, fit, ambitious players eager to perform at their best. South Korea initially finds itself in Group E, with challenging matchups against Malaysia, Jordan, and Bahrain.
The team’s potential success in the Asian Cup is bolstered by a formidable roster featuring Bayern Munich’s skilled defender Kim Min-jae and the blossoming 22-year-old talent Lee Kang-in, whom Klinsmann likened to “a flower that starts to bloom.” Hwang Hee-chan’s noteworthy form, evidenced by his recent 10th Premier League goal against Brentford, adds further strength to the lineup.
Despite these strengths, Klinsmann faced the unfortunate omission of Hwang Ui-jo due to a suspension arising from a police investigation into allegations of illegal filming of an ex-girlfriend. The Norwich City forward vehemently denies these claims.
Klinsmann remains optimistic about the team’s chances, asserting that the diverse skill set within the roster positions them as strong contenders for the Asian Cup. The team will undergo further refinement in the coming weeks, entering the tournament with a well-tuned strategy and unwavering confidence.
