Manchester United faces a difficult task ahead as they navigate the potential departure of several key players on free transfers following the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. With numerous senior squad members able to negotiate pre-contracts with clubs outside of England or run down their deals, the club must make some tough decisions.
As the transfer window looms, the future of some of the biggest names at Old Trafford hangs in the balance. While some may secure new deals under the guidance of manager Erik ten Hag, others may be on their way out. In this article, we look at the players who could be leaving the club and those who may still have a future at Manchester United.
Anthony Martial
Anthony Martial is a 28-year-old French forward with Manchester United since 2015. He spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan to Sevilla, leading many to believe he would leave the club permanently. However, he remained at the club and has played a significant role in the team due to injuries to other forwards. Under the current manager, Erik ten Hag, Martial has made 19 appearances and scored two goals. While his performances have been decent, they have not been enough to secure his future with the club. Many experts predict he may be allowed to move on in the summer, if not sooner.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Martial’s future, he remains a talented player with the potential to contribute to any team he joins. Luton boss Edwards has praised his skills, calling him “an artist”, while Pochettino has compared him to Di Maria, describing him as “a potential Di Maria.”
Raphael Varane
Raphael Varane, who is 30 years old, has not yet played more than 25 Premier League games in a single season for Manchester United since his move from Real Madrid. Despite being fit, Jonny Evans has sometimes been preferred to the French international defender. Furthermore, Evans, who is 35 years old, has signed a short-term contract and could leave the club next year.
Reports suggest that Varane may be tempted by a move back to Real Madrid. Given that he is likely on significant wages, he could be another older player that the club decides to let go if they do not activate their 12-month extension clause.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the 26-year-old right-back for Manchester United, has a contract that runs until 2024, with the option to extend for 12 months. While a return to Crystal Palace has been suggested, United’s most pragmatic choice is extending his contract. Wan-Bissaka has struggled with his offensive contributions, and he and Diogo Dalot share right-back duties with no clear winner under Ten Hag. Despite this, another year at United could give him one last chance to prove himself. In the meantime, Wan-Bissaka continues to be a solid defensive option for the team.
Sofyan Amrabat & Sergio Reguilon
Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon were brought in on loan during the summer transfer window. Amrabat was expected to be a dynamic presence for Manchester United, recreating his World Cup form for Morocco. On the other hand, Reguilon was signed as cover for the injured Luke Shaw.
Reports suggest that Amrabat has already been marked for the exit, while Reguilon has done little wrong but has been unspectacular. Amrabat is set to see out his loan deal, but it remains to be seen if Tottenham want to recall Reguilon in January.
It is worth noting that TNT Sports, which presents premium live sports rights, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and more, is now available for streaming in the UK through Discovery+. Fans can enjoy a subscription that includes TNT Sports, Eurosport, and entertainment in one destination. TNT Sports can also be watched through BT, EE, Sky, and Virgin Media. Player Loan Status: Sofyan Amrabat is On loan until the end of the season. Sergio Reguilon’s Loan status is uncertain; Tottenham may recall them in January.
Manchester United’s decision to sign Amrabat and Reguilon on loan was seen as a last-minute move as the club left their business late. While Reguilon’s future remains uncertain, Amrabat’s future with Manchester United seems to end.
