Amnesty International has called on the Kenyan government to investigate the deaths of over 60 protestors killed during demonstrations that shook the country for months this year.
The protests, primarily by youth, were sparked by a controversial finance bill proposing tax hikes and new levies on a struggling population.
Rights groups report that in addition to those killed, several individuals have gone missing in the weeks following the protests. On Wednesday, Amnesty launched a petition supported by a dossier that includes video footage and interviews with eyewitnesses, lawyers, and medical professionals. The organisation accuses Kenyan security forces of using lethal force against demonstrators.
The dossier also identifies specific rifles, submachine guns, and shotguns used by police during the protests. Bereaved mothers recently gathered in Nairobi, demanding justice for their children who were either killed or disappeared during the unrest.
As the protests mark their third month, there has been no official investigation into the conduct of security forces during the demonstrations.
